The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has around 55,000 km of paved roads, including some 3,900 km of dual-carriageway expressways.
KSA's Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) operates 59 locomotives, 75 passenger carriages and 1,860 freight wagons on a network of over 1,400 km. This centres on the 449-km main line between KSA's capital, Riyadh, and Dammam on the east coast.
In 2010 SRO carried around 1.1 million passengers and 3.5 million tonnes of cargo. Volumes are expected to increase significantly with the completion of three major projects:
Mecca has a new 18-km metro system, a metro is under construction in Riyadh and another is planned for Jeddah.
