KSA’s Solar Energy cluster

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has the intense solar irradiation, land, natural resources, expertise and ambition to significantly expand its solar energy industry.

On the fundamentals alone, the potential is clear: firstly, Saudi Arabia has twice the average solar irradiation experienced in Europe, with thermal energy of up to 2,550 kWh/m2 a year; and secondly, Saudi Arabia extends over a huge area - KSA covers 2,149,690 sq km, making it the largest country in the Middle East.

Furthermore, with Saudi Arabia's population expanding by 2.3% and its economy growing by 5%-6% annually, the country's demand for electricity is increasing by 5% a year.

Saudi Arabia's solar energy industry is expected to:

  • Meet fast-growing demand for clean, renewable energy
  • Lead to the export of high value-added solar products
  • Create opportunities for the export of electricity
  • Contribute to its National Industrial Strategy and economic development
  • Facilitate economic diversification
  • Boost environment protection and sustainability
  • Create opportunities to test solar products
