Minerals and Metal Processing cluster
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is rich in the natural resources and raw materials needed for manufacturing and industrial development.
Covering 2 million sq km, Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East and the 14th largest country in the world. Its particular geology also serves to give it an abundance of natural resources and raw materials, including:
- Metal ores such as bauxite and iron ore
- Metals such as manganese, silver, copper, tungsten, chromium, zinc and lead
- Industrial minerals such as feldspar, sulphur, gypsum, kaolin and barite
Most of Saudi Arabia's precious and basic minerals are located in the west of the country, parallel to the Red Sea, while its industrial minerals are mainly in the east.
With its abundant metallic minerals, plentiful energy and other advantages, Saudi Arabia is developing its metals processing capacity and capabilities. This is taking place rapidly and on a broad front, especially in high-demand areas such as aluminium and steel.
The Industrial Clusters program (IC) is driving the development of KSA's Minerals and Metal Processing cluster. Industrial Clusters aims to:
- Encourage and support further Saudi Arabian and foreign investment in the sector
- Boost KSA's exports of high value-added, metal-based components, semi-finished products and finished products
- Create and sustain employment
- Reduce aluminium, steel and other metal-related imports
- Assist with national economic diversification
